XIV century Great Helm
Late XIV century Great Helm based on the photo of a medieval helmet from a private collection.
According to the National Museum of Scotland there’s only a few 14th-century helmets to survive:
– Great helm with decoration (cimier) of Albert von Prankh, approx. 1350. Preserved in Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien in Austria.
– 14th century great helm of Sir Richard Pembridge, approx.1375. Preserved in National Museum of Scotland, Edinburgh.
– Helmet of Black Prince (King Edward III of England), approx. 1376. Preserved in Canterbury Cathedral, England.
– 14th century great helmet from private collection.
Mentioned helmets look similar to the great helm Bolzano (approx. 1300). But they have been made of more embossed form and higher quality. Approximately after 1350 this type of helmet was used mostly during jousting and tournaments. However, up to the beginning of the XV century we still can find illustrations showing the knights wearing great helm during the battle.
Our late XIV century Great Helm is equipped with the leather strap. It is constructed of 5 overlapped plates. The reinforcement rib crosses the front part of the helmet. Breathing holes are drilled on the right side. The eye slots have raised edges. Two cross-shaped holes are on both sides of the helmet.
