Linen Arming Cap | Get free with your helmet

A question we often receive is, “How do I keep the inner padding of the helmet clean while it’s sewed to the skull of the helmet?”

Our advice is – wear a linen arming cap under it.

In order to keep both your hair and your helmet padding clean, you need a washable layer between your hair and your helmet padding.

In Medieval Europe this type of linen cap was the most widespread type of basic head covering.  A biggins (another name for this linen hat) was in common use from the XII up to XV centuries. It had the same purpose as underclothes. It was worn under the more expensive and elaborate hat. However, it was often used as the sole head-covering. No wonder that knights also put a linen cap under their helmets. Breaking the common stereotype, medieval warriors did care about cleanliness.
