Bascinet shaped helmets with a flat face visor are by far the most popular amongst sportsmen engaged in medieval full contact combat in both buhurt and duel categories under HMB, IMCF and SCA regulations. The bascinet was developed from a helmet that looked like a small hat. Medieval knights wore it under a much heavier and more solid helmet called a top helm. During the initial clash on horseback at the very beginning of the battle, knights used both helmets at the same time. Once on foot and about to change their weapon to battle axes and swords, they shed their heavy top helmets and continued the fight using only the bascinet. During the time when top helms were prevalent the bascinet did not have a visor. It only covered the head, so the neck and face remained unprotected.

From approximately the XIV century the bascinet acquired a visor and the posterior part that encloses the neck lengthened. The progressive development of the bascinet gradually lead it to replace the top helm as the latter was no longer needed. In addition to increasing the protection provided by the bascinet, the visor of a bascinet allowed knights to feel more comfortable as its ventilation holes increased their breathing ability relative to a top helm. Additionally, during long marches the visor could be lifted without fear of exposing oneself because it could easily close when necessary, to allow the knight to take the field. The “lock button” on spoletto helms prevent uncontrolled opening of the visor and therefore provides reliable protection.

The evolution of the bascinet helmet was not limited to the appearance of the visor and additional neck protection. Bascinets also gained an interior padded lining. A padded liner is a kind of fabric hat padded with soft, natural materials which is sewed inside of the helmet through special holes in the dome of the helmet.  The padding serves mainly as shock-absorption, helping to reduce the effects of the strongest strokes from halberds, axes, or falchions.

Our armor and helmets are made using different materials such as mild steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, and titanium. Helmets made from tempered steel, mild steel, or stainless steel can be practically used both in duels and buhurt. We don’t recommend the use of titanium helmets in buhurts. But it has an evident advantage in duels because of its low weight.
After more than 15 years of helmet manufacturing, we have gained extensive experience in the manufacture of bascinet helmets. Although we are very fond of history and respect the craftsmanship of XII and XIV century blacksmiths, modern fighting sports require a modern approach, which is why we use modern equipment.     This helmet is super comfortable, breathable, and durable! I received my helmet in February of 2023, I have worn it twice already for Buhurt! The visor button is robust and has stayed working despite all the abuse it takes! I get compliments on the visors domineering look all the time! Forge of Svan has a fan for life with this helmet! I can not say enough good things about this helmet! Thank you Forge of Svan!

    Helmet is absolutely incredible, fits perfectly, looks great, is very sturdy, and arrived unblemished. I’m still rather new to ordering armor, and the communication with ForgeofSvan was excellent, they always got back in a timely manner and answered all my stupid questions. USPS made a shipping mistake, but the team fixed it right away. So glad to finally get my hands on this, I’ll unquestionably be ordering the rest of my kit from them soon.

    A very asthetically pleasing and robust helm. Helmet holes provide near-perfect vision, allowing me to see any opponents and see obstacles on the ground. The aventail is very protective and doesn't get in the way of my movements. The interior was padded thickly, giving me great blunt force defense, but also hampering my hearing considerably. An overall great purchase. I look forward to my next order to Forge of Svan to further complete my harness!
