Chalkis Brigandine
The ruins of the fortress of Chalcis (greek Χαλκίδα) is located on Euboea, the Greek island. In 1157 it was robbed by Normans. Since 1209 the fortress was a Venetian colony and became one of the easternmost military outposts of the Venetian empire. It was renamed Negroponte. In 1470, after a couple years of the hard siege the fortress of Chalcis was captured by the Ottoman Empire and stayed under its ruling until the 1833 year. The large collection of medieval armor had been discovered here only in 1840, after Chalcis became a part of independent Greece. Collection contains rare armors of the XIV and XV centuries and includes some fragments of brigandines.
Such a type of brigandine armor can be seen on the medieval illuminated manuscripts of the first half of the XIV – XV centuries. Such as “David and Goliath” from the “Psalter and Hours” of Alphonso V of Aragon c.1442. This one was chosen by us as an example to create our Chalcis Brigandine. Steel plates are riveted by three rivets each. The totally overlapping plates give no gap construction. Brigandine puts on like a jacket. It’s quite handy when you need to be armored quickly. There are leather straps on the shoulders to regulate the perfect fit of your torso armor. Chalcis Brigandine fastens with the eight leather straps on the front. You can choose the covering material between fabric and suede leather which will be reinforced with the canvas for the long lasting. Therefore there are two layers of the shell covering: canvas+fabric or canvas+leather.
As the metal plates are made to overlap each other – the different parts of brigandine are made from different thickness. This is to minimize the overall weight of armor.
In the options below you can choose one of the seven combinations:
upper part (chest, sides, back): 1.5mm steel, lower part (culet): 1.0mm steel
upper part (chest, sides, back): 1.0mm tempered steel, lower part (culet): 0.8mm tempered steel
upper part (chest, sides, back): 1.5mm tempered steel, lower part (culet): 1.0mm tempered steel
upper part (chest, sides, back): 1.0mm stainless steel, lower part (culet): 0.8mm stainless steel
