Chalkis Brigandine
The ruin of the fortress of Chalcis (Greek “Χαλκίδα”) is located on the Greek island of Euboea. In 1157 it was pillaged by Normans. Beginning in 1209 the fortress became a Venetian colony, renamed Negroponte, and was one of the easternmost military outposts of the Venetian Empire. In 1470, after a couple of years of hard siege, the fortress of Chalcis was captured by the Ottoman Empire and stayed under its rule until 1833. A large collection of medieval armor was discovered there in 1840, after Chalcis became a part of independent Greece. The collection contains rare armor from the XIV and XV centuries and includes some fragments of brigandines.
One of these types of brigandine armor can be seen in medieval illuminated manuscripts of the first half of the XIV and XV centuries, particularly in “David and Goliath” from the “Psalter and Hours” of Alphonso V of Aragon (c.1442). This particular example was chosen to create our Chalcis Brigandine. The steel plates are connected by a triangular pattern of three rivets and the totally overlapping plates eliminate gaps in protection. Our Chalcis Brigandine is put on like a jacket, which is quite handy when you need to be armored quickly. It fastens with eight frontal leather straps. There are also leather straps on the shoulders to adjust for a perfect fit. The plates of our Chalcis Brigandine are secured to two textile layers; wool fabric or suede leather for the exterior of the brigandine which will be reinforced with canvas to provide long-lasting durability.
As the metal plates are made to overlap each other, the different parts of the brigandine are made from different thicknesses. This is done to minimize the overall weight of armor.
In the options below you can choose one of the seven combinations:
