Vertically Quilted Gambeson

Vertically Quilted Gambeson

ID: 16205

A gambeson is armor made of multiple layers of fabric. Often stuffed with (depending on region) tow, wool, horsehair, and sometimes saturated with salt. Depending on its period, the region and class of the wearer, it was considered either as armor, or as under-armor wear.
For example, for knights, a padded jacket was not armor, and was worn solely as under-armor wear. But for infantry in Central and Western Europe, from the Dark Ages until the XV century, padded jackets were considered armor, and were often the only armor that infantry could afford.

This handmade gambeson has long sleeves, quality machine stitching, and is quilted vertically.

Responding to customer feedback, we have added the option of stuffing one layer of padding instead of our traditional two. Under-armor padding should not be too thick as it can create mobility issues and plays a key role in thermoregulation during training and fights.

Our Gambeson can be completed with sewn leather arming points for arm armor connection optionally. One pair of arming points will be attached on the shoulders. Two pairs will be sewn to the sleeve above and under the elbow joint.

Please note: the sewn arming points may not fit the holes of your steel arm harness. In this case, you can easily unsew them and change the positions according to your needs.

Just opened it and tested. Fit well and looks great.

Just got my one-layer gambeson in the mail. The quality of the craftmanship is great. They even thought of putting an additional strengthening under the rivet, so that it does not rip out easily (one of the problems I had with other gamesons from other sellers). But it seems I made a mistake when sending them my measurements. The arms are about 5 cm to long.... Well, that most likely is my own fault.... What I did not like, was the fact that the arms are connected with just two rivets. Thats not enough to keep the arms tightly connected to the body. I think there should be at least 4-6 rivet connections between the arms and the body. These problems I am going to rectify myself by putting new rivets in. Another thing is that the leather used for the belts and buckles is very thin. I am unsure about how strong it is and how much damage it can take before ripping apart. Also, this too shows my inexperience, a gambeson with just one layer seems too little to give adequate padding under armor plates. For Noobs like me it would be good to add a warning here. But its going to work well for medieval festivals in summer. A heavy padded Gambeson is impossible to wear in temperatures over 20 degrees Celsius. :-) Over all good quality product, just my inexperience got me here.

This was my first order here and I got exactly what I wanted. I got the custom fit following the directions, and it fits perfectly. The single-layer fits well under armor. Feels natural to move in but still plenty of padding. Can't wait to order more from here.

I bought a custom fit version for myself with only single layer, with buckles and separate arms, the fit is Apsolulty perfect! Snug which is how its supposed to be and even though its simgle layer, it has perfect amount of dense padding for protection against blows. It also comes with a very high back collar which I found is rather nice added protection for the back of your neck! Only thing i would recommend to new buyers is that you get your arms sewed in and you do not do the buckles which I find look quite lovely but do not work as well as ties with armor on over, sadly i think i will have to take mine off and put ties in myself, but that was my mistake not forge of svan, they did exactly as asked and turned out better then i expected for the price! Good for those starting out in fighting!
